The voluntary carbon market quality assurance organization Verra has published a revised version of its standard-setting guide for installing energy-efficient cookstoves, ovens, and dryers as a tactic for reducing the use of non-renewable biomass.
The updated version (v1.2) can be found in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program under the name VMR0006 Energy Efficiency and Fuel Switch Measures in Thermal Applications.
The first attempt to standardize the methodology was published in AMS-II.G., Energy efficiency measures in thermal applications of non-renewable biomass, which was then revised into VMR0006 Methodology for Installation of High Efficiency Firewood Cookstoves, v1.1.
The newest revised version of the guidelines emerged after a public feedback consultation on proposed minor changes launched in March 2023 by Verra.

The most recent updates touch upon aligning default values and references to specific sections of the CDM methodology laid out in AMS-II.G., Energy efficiency measures in thermal applications of non-renewable biomass.
The new information contains updates to default values for the following parameters: Baseline device efficiency; Average annual consumption of woody biomass; Wood-to-charcoal conversion factor; and Non-CO2 emission factor for wood fuel.
To address the issue of uncertainty when calculating the fraction of non-renewable biomass (fNRB), the revised guideline will use the default value of 30% from CDM TOOL33 and apply a discount factor if fNRB is calculated using CDM TOOL30.
With the newest changes, fuel switch projects using renewable biomass will have additional provisions in regards to applicability conditions, monitoring requirements, and accounting procedures for project emissions and leakage.
As of July 7, 2023, the original AMS-II.G. is no longer available as an independent methodology within Verra’s VCS Program.
The projects that have applied for inclusion on the Verra Registry prior to July 6, 2023, are required to undergo validation using AMS-II.G. until January 5, 2024. For new projects, the listing request should be made using VMR0006 v1.2.
